Game AI Programmer (RL Expert)

Location: Canada Remote

Work Type: Freelance Contract

Project: Pirate Raids: Conquest

About the Role

We're hiring a specialized AI Programmer to develop intelligent enemy behavior systems using Reinforcement Learning (RL) for Pirate Raids: Conquest, our tactical mobile/PC collectible card game. This is a contract-based role focused on building AI opponents that adapt to player behavior, learn over time, and offer a dynamic, ever-evolving gameplay experience.

You’ll work closely with our CTO and our game design team to bridge machine learning research with real-time game systems. Your primary mission is to design, train, and deploy reinforcement learning agents that make smart, strategic choices in a turn-based card environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement enemy AI systems using Reinforcement Learning tailored for collectible card game mechanics.
  • Develop self-play and simulation frameworks to enable RL agents to learn through trial and error.
  • Build custom reward systems and state representations reflective of in-game goals and tactics.
  • Optimize agents for performance in mobile environments (low memory, CPU-efficient).
  • Work with the game team to integrate agents into Unity and ensure smooth interaction with gameplay systems.
  • Analyze agent behavior, evaluate performance, and iterate on training strategies.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise in Reinforcement Learning (e.g., PPO, A3C, DQN, or similar algorithms).
  • Experience deploying RL agents in real-time or turn-based environments.
  • Familiarity with Unity and C# or a willingness to collaborate closely with Unity developers.
  • Solid grasp of game design principles, especially decision-making and strategy systems.
  • Ability to balance intelligent behavior with engaging, human-like gameplay.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience building AI for CCGs, turn-based tactics games, or similar genres.
  • Understanding of behavior trees, state machines, or hybrid AI systems.
  • Interest in player modeling or opponent adaptation systems.
  • Academic background in AI, ML, or related research.
  • Experience optimizing machine learning models for mobile hardware.

Why Join Dytomic?

This is a rare opportunity to apply cutting-edge AI research in a production game, where your work will directly shape the player’s experience. You’ll be supervised by a CTO with deep expertise in applied AI and empowered to push creative and technical boundaries in a collaborative team that values innovation, autonomy, and smart design.
